That demo at the car dealership really rubbed me the wrong way

I went to test drive a new sedan last Saturday at a Ford lot in Columbus and the salesman bragged about the AI lane keeping feature. He said it practically drives itself on the highway. I asked him what happens if the system misreads a faded lane marker at 70 mph and he just smiled and changed the subject. Nobody at the dealership could tell me how often those cameras fail or what the backup is. Has anyone else walked into a store and felt like the sales people are just pushing AI features they don't understand?

Perfect, so the car drives itself as long as the paint on the road is fresh and the sun isn't in the wrong spot. The guy smiled and dodged the question because his entire answer would've been "uhhh, the owner's manual says don't take your hands off the wheel." Classic dealership move, they'll tell you it's basically a self-driving spaceship until you ask about the kill switch.

Classic dealership move" is exactly right. They love to hype up features they can't even explain when things go wrong. I'd rather have a car that just drives normal than one that makes me guess if I'm about to swerve into a ditch.

@cooper.drew hit the nail on the head with the spaceship comparison. Reminds me of when my nephew tried to show me his "smart" fridge that needed a software update just to make ice.
