My sister swore by tinfoil balls under the basket, she was right
My sister told me to put a crumpled ball of tinfoil under the air fryer basket to lift it closer to the heating element. I figured it was some Pinterest hack that would mess up the fan or scratch the coating. Tried it last Tuesday with frozen chicken wings, 20 minutes at 400, and the skin crisped up way better than any of the mesh racks I bought. The tinfoil just sits on the floor plate, no contact with the heating coil, and it didn't shift at all when I shook the basket halfway. Just make sure you use a solid sheet, not the thin stuff, and shape it into a tight fist-sized ball. Anyone else run into a weird trick that actually improved their air fryer results? What else do you all prop up under there?
Tinfoil balls, that is a new one on me. I ended up using an old oven-safe ramekin flipped upside down under one side of the basket to give it a slight tilt, which helps grease drain off chicken thighs. Also figured out that putting a couple of slices of stale bread under the basket soaks up extra oil and stops the smoke detector from going off. Solid sheet is the key though, the thin stuff just flakes apart.
