My view on pre-heating engines shifted after a cold morning start.

Pre-heating is essential even for short flights in mild weather.

Honestly it's less about the immediate feel and more about the long-term wear. Those cold starts add up and grind parts down faster than you'd think. A quick pre-heat just saves so much unseen damage over the years.

Used to skip it all the time until my engine ran rough one morning. Now I always plug in for ten minutes, even if it's not that cold out. Makes a huge difference in how it sounds and feels right after start-up.

@jana_black That's a perfect example of how a little preventative care saves a lot of trouble later... seems true for cars and a lot of other things. You learn it the hard way once and then the habit sticks for good. It just makes everything run smoother.

Yeah, that "learn it the hard way" thing hits home. I'm the guy who never changed his cabin air filter until the car smelled like a wet dog. @lisa578 is right, it applies to everything. Like ignoring that weird noise from the washing machine until it starts dancing across the floor, or putting off sealing the deck until you've got rot and a huge bill. You skip the small thing once and pay for the big fix later, every single time.
