That Teflon tape trick on fuel line fittings bit me in Anchorage

So last week I was doing a annual on a C172 and the owner complained about a slow weep at the carb inlet. I figured I'd wrap the fitting with a bit of Teflon tape like some guys do, you know, just to get it snug. Big mistake. Two days later the line cracked right at the fitting because the tape messed with how the torque seated the flare, the vibration did the rest. My IA chewed me out for about 10 minutes, said tape is for pipe threads, not AN fittings, and now I gotta replace the whole line plus the carb gasket. Cost me around $140 in parts and a full afternoon redoing the job right. Anyone else ever get burned by a shortcut that seemed harmless at the time, or is it just me and my bad judgment?
