Backyard drainage took 14 months and two contractors in Calgary

We moved into a 1980s bungalow in Calgary last spring and noticed pooling water near the foundation after every heavy rain. The first contractor quoted $6,000 for a French drain and said it would take two weeks, but he disappeared after digging one trench. I hired a second crew who found the original weeping tile was crushed and hooked into the sewer line, which is illegal now. That fix ended up costing $11,200 and took another four months with permits and inspections. Has anyone else dealt with old drainage systems that turned into a much bigger project than the first estimate?

Wait, are you sure the old weeping tile was actually hooked into the sewer line, because in Calgary that was pretty standard until the 1990s and it's usually grandfathered in? Either way, 14 months sounds brutal, lol.
