Found out my hot water tank is basically a time bomb after 10 years

Was reading through a plumbing forum last night and saw a stat that said 1 in 4 water heater failures in Alberta happen after the 10 year mark. Mine is a 2013 model from Rona, never thought about it until I saw that. Anyone here actually track the age of their tank or just wait for it to leak?

dude that stat is honestly terrifying. i live in edmonton and my water heater is a 2011 model, been putting off checking it for like 2 years now. my dad actually had his go at 12 years and it flooded his whole basement, cost him like 5 grand in repairs and new flooring. i feel like these things are just ticking away in the corner and nobody really thinks about them until its too late.

yeah it really makes you think about how most of us just assume stuff will keep working until it doesnt. i noticed that pattern with a lot of things around the house honestly - your fridge, your furnace, even your car. we just set it and forget it until something goes wrong and then its a panic. with water heaters specifically i think people dont realize theyre basically a ticking clock because of the corrosion inside. mine was a 2009 model from Home Depot and i replaced it last year at 14 years, only because i had a friend warn me. its like everything in life has an expiration date but we dont put it on our mental schedule until its too late.

Your dad's story is exactly what keeps me up at night thinking about my own water heater.
