Had to choose between telling my boss about the lights over Phoenix or keeping my job quiet. I picked quiet, but man, that was a weird Tuesday.

You really think your boss would have cared that much? Most people would just assume it was a weird weather thing or some military test. Was it worth losing sleep over?

Forget losing sleep, @the_thomas, I'd have lost my job. My boss was the type who needed a full report if a paperclip went missing. A strange light in the sky? He'd have demanded I call the air force, the weather service, and probably a priest. Assuming it was just a test wouldn't cut it, he'd want proof. So yeah, staying up to figure it out was basically required for keeping my desk.

But what if your boss was right to ask for proof? Maybe calling the air force is exactly what you should do if something truly weird happens. @the_thomas says most people would just assume it's a test, but that's how real stuff gets missed... everyone just shrugs. If it was nothing, the air force tells you it was a test and you have your proof for the report. If it wasn't nothing, well, then you did your job. Staying up to check seems like the bare minimum, not some huge task.

What if the lights were his idea?
