A forum regular in Osaka told me to skip the dub, he was spot on
Back in March I was about to start a 90 episode mecha series and someone on a fansub forum who had been around since 2006 said I should watch it subtitled even though the dub had big names. I almost ignored him because I usually multitask while watching, but I gave it a shot. Three episodes in I realized the dub changed a bunch of character nicknames and jokes that completely missed the tone. It took me about two extra weeks to finish the whole run, but I actually cared about the cast by the end. Have any of you ever had a random internet stranger's advice save you from a bad experience?
Old buddy of mine had the exact same setup back in the day with 2003 FMA. He almost dropped the whole show because that dub made everyone sound like they were reading off cue cards... but then some random dude on a message board told him to switch to subs. Night and day difference, @blair_nguyen. He still brings it up whenever someone talks about anime dubs. That old forum guy probably had no idea he saved someone's entire anime experience with one post. Funny how a stranger's advice can stick with you for years like that.
