My cousin told me to skip the dub and watch sub for 3 weeks straight
He swore the English voice actors ruined the show's emotional punch. I gave in after the 5th time he nagged me, and now I get why this sub is the only way some scenes hit. Anyone else have a friend who turned out to be right about something like this?
The whole dub vs sub thing gets way more interesting when you think about mouth flaps. Japanese is a fast language, so the original voice actors have to match their lines to the animation timing. But English takes longer to say things, so the dub writers have to cram and cut stuff just to make the lips move right. That's why some emotional scenes feel rushed in English. The sub version lets the silence and the pauses breathe, which is where the real weight sits. Your cousin was basically protecting you from a pacing problem most people never notice.
Oh man, I read somewhere that a lot of the original voice actors actually ad-libbed some lines that didn't make it into the subtitles. So you're literally missing jokes and character moments if you stick to dub. Your cousin knew what he was talking about, for sure.
