Pro tip: watch a 2005 anime then a 2024 one back to back and count the still frames
I did this last month with a show from 2005 and a new one from this season, both fight scenes, and the gap threw me off. The older one had maybe 40 frames of actual movement in a 30 second clip, while the new one looked smooth until I paused it and saw the same face held for almost 2 seconds. I think it comes down to digital tools letting studios stretch key frames way further than cel animation ever could, plus way tighter schedules. It made me way less hard on older animation and way more suspicious of pretty stills. Anyone got a modern show that actually keeps real motion in every fight, or is this just how it is now?
Aw man, that's just how it's always been though, cel animation reused frames and held cels for ages too, you just notice it more now because the new stuff is so clean. Plenty of modern shows keep real motion in fights, you just gotta look past the big studio stuff everyone posts clips of.
