Old lady taught me something about ice makers last Tuesday

I was fixing a fridge in a house out in Oakwood and the customer kept watching me work. She was maybe 80 years old and asked if I knew why her ice maker sounded like a coffee grinder. I said it was probably the gear train but she told me she already fixed it once with a butter knife. She showed me how she pried the frozen auger loose and it actually worked for three more years. Has anyone else had customers show you a fix that actually held up longer than expected?

Oh man, that's impressive. I tried to fix my own toaster once with a paperclip and ended up shorting out the whole kitchen. It worked for about two seconds before the smoke alarm went off and my cat gave me that look of pure disappointment. I think some people just have that old school fix-it instinct, the rest of us just mess things up and call it a learning experience.

Yeah but did you at least learn what not to do with a paperclip and a toaster? Because that's still a valuable lesson even if it comes with a side of electrical burns and a judgmental cat. My dad once tried to rewire a lamp with speaker wire and it worked fine until someone touched the metal shade and got a surprising buzz. Makes you wonder if those old school fix-it people just had better luck or if they were better at hiding their disasters.
