Old school diagnosis vs. new board swapping, which side are you on?
I grew up learning to check the thermistor and run the multimeter before changing anything. The last few years though, I've seen so many guys just swap the main board first thing and it works fine most of the time. I had a fridge in El Paso two weeks ago, freezer fan was cycling weird, I spent 45 minutes testing the ohms and tracing the harness. My partner showed up, threw a new board in it, done in 10 minutes, customer paid the same labor. I still think diagnosing the actual part saves the customer money in the long run, but boards are cheap now and labor is what kills them. Has anyone else had to make that call between speed and old school troubleshooting on a job?
The part about "threw a new board in it, done in 10 minutes" hit me hard. I had a washing machine last month where the timer was acting up, and I spent all this time checking the lid switch and the belt tension, even pulled the whole top off to look at the wiring. Then my brother, who doesn't even do this full time, just ordered a generic board off Amazon for thirty bucks and it fixed the thing in five minutes flat. I still feel that gut punch when I hand over a bill that says I charged three hours of labor for what turned out to be a fifteen minute swap. But the funny thing is, that same board is probably gonna die again in a year because it's cheap junk, and then the customer's gonna call me back, and I'll have to explain why I didn't catch it the first time. So I'm stuck in this weird spot where I know the multimeter is the right way, but the clock on the truck is always telling me to just zip it up and go.
