DAE spend 5 hours trying to figure out if a coin was Roman when it was just a washer
I pulled a crusty metal disc out of a field near Hadrian's Wall last spring and swore it was a dupondius based on the bumpy edge. I ran it under the tap, hit it with a soft brush, then spent 5 hours comparing it to every coin plate in my tattered copy of Roman Coins and Their Values. Turned out the "bust" was just a stamped washer from a 1950s tractor, and I could see the crimp marks the whole time if I had just looked with a loupe first. Cost me a whole Saturday and a little pride. How do you all screen junk before you go down a full ID rabbit hole?
Isn't it funny how we do this with everything, not just coins? You squint at some mystery charge on your bank statement for an hour before you realize it was the pizza you bought last Tuesday. A quick look with the right tool upfront saves you the whole headache.
