Just realized I prefer site reports over glossy documentaries now
Just realized I prefer site reports over glossy documentaries now. Back in 2018 I would watch every fancy archaeology show on TV, loved the dramatic music and big reveals. Then last summer I started reading raw field reports from a dig near York and it totally changed my view. The messy details like soil layers and pottery shard counts tell a more honest story than any narrator can. Anyone else get more from the dry primary sources than the cinematic versions?

The glossy shows have their place though. They get people interested in the first place, which is half the battle. Yeah, the dramatic music and big reveals are cheesy, but they turn a pile of old bones into something a normal person might actually care about. Field reports are great for people already hooked, but they read like a grocery list sometimes. A good documentary makes you ask questions, then you go find the reports for the real answers. Different tools for different jobs, thats all.
