The way people use 'begs the question' drives me up a wall
I was at a dinner party last weekend and someone said 'that begs the question, why would they do that?' and I couldn't help but speak up. I mean, it's not just asking a question, it's when an argument assumes its own conclusion, like saying 'that book is true because it says it's true.' It drives me nuts because everyone on forums and TV uses it wrong, and I feel like the only one who notices. Has anyone else had that awkward moment where you correct someone and they look at you like you're the weird one?

I actually did the same thing at my brother's barbecue last summer and it backfired hard. I just calmly said "actually, begging the question is when you assume the premise" and this guy I barely know goes on a ten minute rant about how language changes. I feel your pain because you're not wrong, but I learned real quick that nobody at a party wants a grammar lesson, even if you're right. I just let it slide now, makes my blood pressure lower and I get to enjoy my burger in peace.
