Just got back from the Atacama Desert and the Milky Way was unreal

I was at the ALMA Observatory in Chile last month and the sky was so dark you could see the galactic core with your bare eyes. I tried to take a photo with my phone but it just came out as a black blur. I'm looking for a real camera now, something under $800 that can handle long exposures. What's a good starter setup for deep sky stuff?

That's a lot of money for a black blur.

Oh man, I used to think that too. But seeing it for real, it's a whole different thing. Makes you want to actually try and capture it.

Totally get what you mean, @sean_green44. It's like the difference between seeing a picture of a sunset and actually feeling the air get cooler while you watch it. You see a recipe online and it's just a list, but then you smell it cooking in your own kitchen and it's a whole mood. That gap between seeing a thing and really feeling it is what makes you want to grab your phone or your camera, or in your case maybe a paintbrush, and actually try to save a piece of it.
