Took me 8 years to realize I was torquing head bolts in the wrong pattern
Had a head gasket blow on a Chevy 350 last month, and when I pulled the heads I saw the old gasket was all scrunched up on one side, which finally made me double-check the factory manual instead of just going off how my grandpa taught me.

Man, I gotta say I think you're overthinking this one. Sure, you wanna torque stuff right, but a scrunched up gasket could be from a dozen things, not just the bolt pattern. How tight did you go? How clean was the surface? What about the bolt holes had old gasket goo in them? I've seen guys chase torque patterns like it's rocket science when half the time it's just a dirty thread or a warped head. Unless you're building a race motor or something with crazy compression, the pattern matters way less than getting the final torque right. And don't get me started on how many small block Chevies I've seen run fine with a slightly off pattern for years. If it ran good after you fixed it, cool, but I bet the old gasket was just tired or the head was slightly off from heat cycles.

Oh great, now I gotta worry about clean threads too? My torque wrench is lucky I even let it near my toolbox.

Did you actually check the head surface with a straightedge before you put the new gasket on? A scrunched up gasket on a small block Chevy usually means the head warped a little from overheating or old age. If the deck isn't true, you could torque it in the perfect pattern and still end up with a leak.
