Heard a dev ops guy say '99.9% uptime is a lie' at a meetup in Austin

I was grabbing coffee at a SaaS meetup in Austin last Thursday and overheard this dev ops engineer telling his buddy that most companies claiming 99.9% uptime are just hiding maintenance windows in their fine print. He said they count planned downtime as 'excluded events' so the number looks better for sales decks. Has anyone else dug into their vendor's SLA and found that loophole?

Yeah my buddy found that exact loophole in his cloud provider's contract.

Most SLAs are clear about maintenance windows if you actually read the legalese instead of just skimming. Those exclusions are standard industry practice and they're doing you a favor by being upfront about it rather than claiming 100%.
