Hot take: I watched a demo at a trade show in Austin where a sales guy couldn't answer a single technical question about their own API. That's the moment I started requiring a technical co-presenter for every vendor call.

It's a good policy that saves everyone's time and filters out the unprepared.

Totally get where you're coming from. Honestly, it feels rough when you're the one getting filtered out though. I've been there, putting in the work but just missing some random requirement. Tbh, it can really kill your confidence for a while. Makes the whole process feel kinda cold, even if it's efficient.

Yeah, that whole filtering thing reminds me of trying to apply for a freelance gig last year. They wanted a very specific file type I didn't have ready, and it just shut the whole thing down instantly. Felt exactly like what @ivan774 is saying, just a cold stop after putting in the effort. Makes you wonder if the system is actually catching the unprepared or just people who had one off day.
