Wasted $1,800 on a demo data tool that broke our staging sync twice

I bought a sandbox data tool back in March to keep our staging database in sync with prod, and it cost us $1,800 over three months before I pulled the plug. The first week it copied a customer table into staging with live emails still in it, and our support lead found out before I did. Then it would just skip rows on big tables, so QA kept filing bugs that were not real bugs. I am glad it is gone but the cleanup ate two of my weeks, so has anyone found a seed script or open source option that does not do this?
