Hit 200 repeat clients last month and it felt weird
I run a small bookkeeping service and last month I crossed 200 businesses that have stuck with me for over a year. That number always felt like a pipe dream when I started in 2019 with just a couple of coffee shop owners. It mattered because my whole model depends on trust, not flashy sales. I kept track manually in a spreadsheet for the first 40 clients, then had to switch to proper software. Reaching 200 made me realize I need to hire someone part time just to handle the check-ins and follow-ups. Anyone else hit a client count that forced them to change how they run things?
31 was my number. I had this whole thing in my head where if I knew every client by name and their dog's name, I was doing it right. Hitting 31 made me realize I couldn't keep that up and actually grow. It forced me to build a simple client portal and automate the boring follow-ups, and honestly, the service got better, not worse. I thought that personal touch was everything, but I was wrong. The systems are what let me keep the personal touch alive.
