Our 6 person shop in Boise got sold on a $400 a month payroll service, is that normal or did we get lucky?
Three weeks ago our bookkeeper quit (her husband got a job out of state) and left us with a shoebox of timesheets and a spreadsheet held together with tape. I run a small cabinet install crew, 6 guys including me, and I was doing payroll by hand at the kitchen table for two weeks straight. A buddy down the street uses a service that does direct deposit, takes out the taxes, files the quarterly stuff, all of it. He pays $400 a month plus a per check fee. That felt steep to me at first but after messing up one guy's overtime by $80 and eating it, I'm starting to think it's cheap. What are other small shops paying for this stuff? And does anyone actually check that these services are filing the right forms, or do you just trust them?
