Heard a thru-hiker say 'it's not about miles per day, it's about steak per dollar' and that reframed how I look at resupply costs on multi-day trips
That one quote made me realize I was spending way too much on Mountain House meals when I could be hitting up local diners for $12 steak and eggs at the end of a long stretch, has anyone else swapped freeze-dried for town food on a budget?

Steak per dollar" is the kind of math I can finally get behind, considering my usual calculations involve "how many sad granola bars can I fit in one pocket." I once convinced myself a $6 bag of trail mix was a steal, then promptly spent $18 on a greasy burger and fries in town. Now I just bring instant oatmeal for the trail and save my real budget for the diner breakfast that actually fills me up.

oh man the diner breakfast move is genius honestly. I do the same thing now, pack the bare minimum for the trail and just accept that im gonna drop real money on a big meal after. that $6 trail mix trap hit me too many times before i learned lol
