My uncle told me to skip the switchbacks on the Timberline Trail

He said it would save us an hour on the loop around Mount Hood. We tried it last August and ended up sliding down a steep, loose scree slope that wrecked my friend's knee. It took us over three hours to get him stabilized and back to the main trail. We lost a full day and had to cut the trip short. That 'shortcut' cost us way more time and risk than just following the marked path. Has anyone else had a bad experience with off-trail advice in that area?

Yeah, sliding down scree with a full pack is the worst. It throws your balance off completely. You're not just sliding, you're fighting the weight trying to tip you over. Makes every step unpredictable. That's how a simple slip turns into a real disaster.

Totally agree. That feeling when the pack shifts is the worst part. It turns a controlled slide into a fight with gravity. One wrong move and you're going for a long, rough ride. Definitely not worth the risk.

Wait, you slid down scree with a full pack? That sounds absolutely terrifying.
