PSA: My backpacking weekend was ruined by a trailhead that was locked up with no warning.

But who do we actually blame for stuff like that? It's easy to say maintenance is lacking, but a path washed out from rain might have just happened, not from neglect. Locked trailheads are often a safety call or a property issue, not always poor upkeep. I once saw a gate closed for fire risk, but the sign went up too late for anyone to know. The real problem is how slow word gets out about these changes, not always who's in charge. It just sucks when plans fall apart because no one told you the rules switched.

Ugh that's the worst! I once drove two hours to a hike just to find the whole path was washed out from rain. Makes you wonder who's even maintaining these places anymore.

Yeah that reminds me of the time I drove an hour for a roadside fix only to find the guy had already sold his truck. Kinda like what john_fisher said about plans just falling apart.
