TIL a pallet of free pavers from a Facebook post almost broke my truck and my back
Saw a post in the Riverside buy/sell group for 400 free concrete pavers, so I hooked up my little 4x8 trailer and drove out there Saturday morning. The guy had them stacked in his side yard and said I could have them all if I moved them myself, which took me 3 trips and about 5 hours in 95 degree heat. On the way home the trailer leaf spring snapped and I limped the last 2 miles at 10 mph with pavers sliding around back there. Got them home and now they're just sitting on a tarp behind my shed because I can't decide if a patio or a fire pit area is worth the work. Anybody know a cheap way to tell if these things will hold up to a freeze or should I just use them as a base layer?
Freeze test is easy, soak one paver in a bucket overnight then stick it in the freezer for a day or two and see if it crumbles or cracks. Around here they usually hold up fine as long as they're not the cheap hollow ones, and even those work for a base under sand or gravel. If you go fire pit, lay a few inches of paver base and sand first, don't just drop them on dirt or they'll heave up every winter. Way easier than pouring a slab either way.
