I used to hate dubbed kung fu movies, now I seek them out
For years I only watched subtitled martial arts flicks, thought the voice acting was lazy and ruined the mood, but after catching a 1980s Shaw Brothers print on cable at 2 AM in Phoenix I finally got it, the mismatch between the lips and the over-the-top English lines makes the fight scenes feel even more ridiculous and fun. Now I actively look for the worst dubs on purpose, the ones where the villain sounds like a bored accountant and the hero yells about avenging his master in a flat monotone. Does anyone else find that bad dubbing actually improves a terrible movie, or am I just broken?

I get why the bad dubbing can be funny in a so bad it's good kind of way, but I don't know if it actually improves the movie. There's a difference between laughing at something and it being better. The Shaw Brothers stuff you're talking about was already over the top before anyone dubbed it, so the weird voice work just adds to the silliness that was already there. A truly terrible movie with a terrible dub is still a terrible movie at the end of the day. I will admit though that a bored accountant voice coming out of a kung fu villain is pretty hard to beat for pure comedy.
