The DVD cover for 'Sharknado 3' went from hilariously bad to boring CGI, what happened?
I rewatched the first Sharknado on a grainy VHS rip last week and the cover art was pure gold, a cartoon shark literally eating a tornado with a guy surfing away. Then I grabbed the Blu-ray for part 3 at a pawn shop in Tulsa and the cover is just a washed out photo of Ian Ziering looking confused next to some blobby digital shark. Same franchise, 3 years apart, but the charm totally vanished. It feels like they hired a real graphic designer instead of letting an intern use MS Paint on a Tuesday. The screener copies I've seen online have the same issue, the practical effects got replaced with green screen mush. Has anyone else noticed the movie posters getting worse as the budgets go up, or is it just me? Must be a studio thing, they spend cash and lose the soul.
The real issue might be that the studio stopped trusting the joke. The first movie was made by people who knew it was stupid and leaned into that. By part 3, they probably got notes from execs saying "make it look legit" to get more movie theater sales, but nobody wanted a legit Sharknado. So you get this weird middle ground where it's not silly enough to laugh at and not good enough to take seriously. The cover art is just the easiest place to see that panic. Same thing happened with the SyFy channel movies around that time, they all started trying to look "premium" and lost that B-movie punch. Honestly the best covers are always the ones where someone clearly spent 20 minutes making it in Photoshop and called it a day.
Whoa wait, they really tried to make Sharknado look legit? Like a real studio executive looked at a movie about sharks swimming through a tornado and thought "this needs to be more serious"? That's insane to me. I remember the first cover where the shark is just straight up photoshopped over a wave and it's perfect. By the third one I bet they had a whole marketing team and everything. Somewhere out there is a guy in a suit who genuinely thought the problem with Sharknado was that it wasn't convincing enough. That's like trying to make a Bigfoot documentary classy.
