Tried to bake bread for my sister's baby shower in Fresno and made a brick
I forgot the yeast entirely 3 years ago and served a loaf that my brother in law literally used as a doorstop for a month. Has anyone else ever skipped one ingredient and ruined the whole thing?
Skipping the yeast is a big one, but that loaf is not really bread, it is more like a flat cracker. The yeast is what makes the dough rise and get airy, so without it you just get a dense puck. What probably happened is you made something closer to hardtack, which is why it worked as a doorstop. Three years ago or now, same result every time. Salt is the one that sneaks up on people, because forgetting it does not stop the rise, it just makes the bread taste flat and sad.
