My uncle's advice about cheap sockets cost me $180 at a truck stop in Flagstaff
So my uncle has been a diesel mechanic for like 30 years and he always told me never to buy those bargain bin socket sets. I figured he was just old school and maybe a little snobby about tools. Last month I needed a 15mm deep socket for a brake job on my F-150 and grabbed a $12 set from a discount store. First bolt rounded off before I even got it loose. Had to borrow a buddy's truck, drive 40 minutes to a real parts store, and pay $180 for a tow when the job dragged past dark. The cheap socket also cracked on the second use. My uncle just laughed and said, 'Told you so.' Anyone else learned that lesson the hard way or am I just the only dummy who ignores family advice?

Oh boy, I sure have. My husband bought a cheap set years ago to change the oil on his truck and the wrench bent like it was made of tinfoil. I went with him to return it and the store clerk actually shrugged and said "you get what you pay for" which just made us feel worse. We ended up buying a mid-range set piece by piece over a few months, and honestly it was worth every penny. I still think about that $12 set every time I see one in a discount bin, and I always tell my kids to just wait and save for better tools.
