The hot dog ratio is a lie we all fell for

I read on the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council website that the standard 10 buns per 8 hot dogs was actually a marketing mistake from the 1940s. Why are we still pretending 8 buns per pack is some kind of crime? Can anyone explain the real logic behind the split?

Oh you ever just buy the 8 pack of buns and the 10 pack of hot dogs? That way you end up with two extra hot dogs for the next batch of buns and it sorta balances out over time. Honestly I gave up trying to match them perfectly and just started freezing the extra buns or hot dogs separately. Keeps the ratio game way less stressful lol.

1940s marketing guys really screwed us all over on that one.

Actually @taraross, I think that hot dog bun packaging goes back way further than the 1940s. The 8-bun packs started in the 1920s when bakeries first started selling them pre-packaged. But the hot dog companies settled on the 10-pack because of how they originally shipped them in bulk for stadiums. So the mismatch has been around since before WWII, not really the 1940s marketers' fault. Still a total pain though, I usually just buy two packs of buns and freeze the four extras.
