Unpopular opinion: Rewatching old family movies is actually kind of sad and I don't get the nostalgia
Last week my sister pulled out a bunch of old VHS tapes from the 90s when we were kids. Everyone was laughing and getting teary-eyed about birthdays and Christmas mornings. But I just sat there feeling kind of down watching all these people who are now divorced, passed away, or just not the same. My dad looked so happy in those videos but now we barely talk. Am I the only one who finds looking back more depressing than heartwarming? Or am I just missing something everyone else gets?

Those old home videos hit different for everyone. My uncle used to film everything on a camcorder from 1992 to 1997, then just stopped. We watched one where my grandma was making jello salad in her kitchen and my grandpa was trying to fix a toaster. They're both gone now and that toaster is probably in a landfill somewhere. It's like watching ghosts having a good time while you're sitting there knowing how it all ends.

Ain't it better to remember them living than to have nothing at all?

Sometimes remembering the living also means remembering the cracks in the picture no one talks about.
