The stat that got me mad: most challenged books are just books with LGBTQ or race stuff in them
I looked at the ALA's top 10 most challenged books list from 2022 and 7 of the 10 were challenged mainly because of LGBTQ content or race, not violence or anything actually rough. Found it on the ALA site after a school board meeting in my town tried to pull 12 titles at once, and the reasons listed were stuff like 'sexual content' for a picture book about two penguins. Does that number surprise anyone else, or is it just what I should have expected?
Read a piece last month about how a huge chunk of the 2022 challenges came from just a handful of organized groups filing dozens of complaints at once, so it is less random parents and more a coordinated thing. That matches what you saw, since "sexual content" for a penguin book is not a real concern, it is a flag they use to pull anything with a gay family in it. The number did surprise me at first too until I realized the reasons listed rarely match the actual book.
