Backed out of a $4,800 repair job after the client wanted me to skip the permit
Homeowner in Maplewood had a water heater swap that turned into a full vent redo. He kept saying his cousin does this stuff all the time and permits are just a tax. I quoted $4,800 with the permit and inspection. He pushed me to do it off the books for $3,200 cash. I walked. Two months later his basement flooded because the new vent setup was wrong and the inspector flagged the whole mess. He called me asking if I'd fix it for what I originally quoted. I said the price is now $5,600 plus the fine he has to pay. Has anyone else lost a job over permits but ended up dodging a much bigger headache?
