Just realized my old lead-based paint remover did something no current product can match
Back in 2003 I used this chemical stripper that got banned a year later, and it took paint off a 1920s door in about 4 minutes flat. Now I'm using soy-based stuff that needs 30 minutes and a scraper that leaves my arm sore for days. Sure, the old stuff probably had a ton of health risks, but I never wore a respirator back then and somehow I'm still fine. What got me thinking is how many products we lost that actually worked better, just because someone got sick in a factory somewhere. Does anyone else miss a banned product that did its job way too well for its own good?

Did your stripper ever turn the paint all wobbly and weird, where you could just wipe it off? My buddy had a can of that old dichloromethane stuff, and he left it on a chair for like ten minutes, then the whole finish came off in one gross, rubbery sheet. He wore no gloves either, and now his hands shake a little when he holds a coffee cup, so maybe the old stuff was a bit too good.
