My mechanic in Dayton said to hunt down the old copper gasket head gaskets before they quit selling them, was he right?

He pulled a box off his shelf and showed me the copper ones he'd been hoarding for 20 years, said the new fiber ones blow out around 40k miles. So now I'm trying to figure out if I should stock up on a part that technically got phased out for a reason, or if he's just old and set in his ways. Anyone actually run the old copper gaskets long term and have real numbers?
