Barber school taught me one way, a shop in Dallas showed me another. Which is right?
I trained at a school in Austin where we always used clippers over comb for fade work, but then I watched a guy in Dallas do a whole fade with just trimmers and a razor, took him 15 minutes less. Has anyone else switched methods after seeing a different shop work, or do you stick with what you learned first?

Watched a guy in Dallas do the same thing and it blew my mind too. The trick is he wasn't using the trimmers to replace clipper over comb, he was using them to set the baseline first so the comb work goes faster. Most schools teach clipper over comb as the whole job because it's easier to grade and test on, not because it's the best way. Once you get the blend down with a razor you can actually get a tighter fade with less guesswork. Stick with the school method until you can do it blind, then start stealing tricks from every shop you walk into.
