Bought a clipper sharpening kit and ruined two good pairs

I figured I'd save money sharpening my own blades, so I dropped $80 on a kit from a supplier in Ohio. First pair came out uneven and tugged hair for a week before I threw them out, second one chipped a tooth on the comb. Has anyone else tried the mail-in sharpening services and actually gotten their money's worth?

My first attempt looked like a blind raccoon chewed on the blades. Let me know if the mail-in thing works, because my kitchen scissors are next on the list.
