Switched from Instagram Reels to static carousel posts and my reach doubled

I spent 6 months chasing Reels trends, posting 3 times a day, getting maybe 200 views each. Then I tried something boring - a 5-slide carousel with screenshots and a step-by-step tip. That single post hit 12,000 views in 48 hours. Now I do 2 carousels a week and maybe 1 Reel. The algorithm seems to reward something that keeps people swiping through, not just quick scrolling. Has anyone else seen better results with static posts over video?

Huh, that's wild. Did you change anything else about the carousels besides going static, or was it literally just the format switch that did it?

@sAMK77 yeah it's definitely the format thing more than anything. But here's what gets me - people lie about how much they actually watch video. Saw someone at a coffee shop the other day scrolling through a Reel, stopped on it for maybe two seconds, then kept going. That's not a view that matters. With carousels though, you have to physically swipe to move on. That forced action makes the algorithm think people are engaged. Same reason why those "swipe to see the result" posts always pop off. It's like the internet is rewarding tiny bits of effort over passive consumption.

You're jumping to conclusions based on one data point though. Reels still get way more reach potential because the algorithm pushes video content harder than static posts in the main feed. I tried the same switch and my carousel numbers were decent but my Reels that actually hit the explore page got ten times the views. Maybe your specific audience just likes text-heavy content more, but that doesn't mean video is dead for everyone.
