Just realized that 'cloud storage' we all use now is just someone else's hard drive in a desert.
Last week I was backing up photos from my phone to Google Drive and it hit me... my dad used to keep all his important papers in a fireproof safe under the stairs. Now we trust some company's warehouse in Arizona or wherever to keep our stuff safe. Three years ago I lost everything when my laptop crashed because I was too cheap to pay for backup. Now I pay $10 a month and don't even know where my data actually lives. Makes me wonder if we traded real control for convenience without really thinking it through. Has anyone else gotten that weird feeling about cloud storage lately?

Exactly the opposite. Cloud storage is better because I don't have to think about it. My dad's fireproof safe got stolen by a guy who saw him put it in the closet. A friend of mine had his external drive fail and lost six years of family photos. Meanwhile my Google Drive has survived two phone drops, a flooded laptop, and me accidentally deleting files three separate times. You can recover stuff from a data center fire way easier than from a crashed hard drive in your own house. That $10 a month is paying someone else to worry about sprinklers and backups and all that junk so I don't have to.

Dude for real, my uncle had a Seagate external drive that just clicked one day and never came back on. He had like 8 years of tax documents and baby photos on there, gone forever. Meanwhile I've had Dropbox recover a file I deleted by accident like 4 years ago because they keep version history. It's not even close. People who hate on cloud storage always tell me "but what if the servers get hacked" and I'm like bro, your phone is already hacked if you're clicking random links. At least Google has a team of people whose whole job is to stop hackers. I pay $10 a month and I sleep way better than my buddy who has a stack of hard drives in his closet that he never backs up anywhere lol.

A buddy of mine used to work at a data center in Oregon. He said one time a sprinkler head malfunctioned and dumped water on like fifty hard drives. They had to ship them to a special recovery place in a refrigerated truck. So your stuff could be fine, or it could be getting a bath right now lol.
