Picked the cheaper hiking boots over the fancy ones and my feet still hurt

Last summer I had to decide between a $120 pair of boots from REI and some $40 ones off Amazon. I went with the cheap ones cause I thought hiking is just walking right? Well after 6 miles on the Appalachian Trail near Harper's Ferry my blisters were insane. Has anyone else found a mid range boot that actually works for under $80?

Man, did you at least try different socks before you blamed the boots?

Did you try those thick wool hiking socks, the kind that go almost up to your knee... or just some normal cotton ones from the store? Cause I've found a cheap boot can be saved with a good sock, but if you're wearing thin dress socks or something, you're gonna get blisters no matter what you buy. What kind of boot was it, a steel toe work boot or a hiking boot... that makes a difference too.
