Strange lights over the desert in New Mexico last month

I was out near Roswell around 2 AM on October 15th and saw a cluster of orange lights hovering silently for about 5 minutes. No sound, no blinking, just floated then shot off faster than anything I've ever seen. Has anyone else caught weird activity out that way or just me?

Spent $60 on a cheap CRM for my landscaping side gig and it saved my butt after one season

I been running a small lawn care biz on the side for like 2 years now. Kept track of everything on paper and my phone notes. Got busy last summer and forgot to follow up with like 5 customers who wanted quotes. Lost maybe $800 or more in jobs. So I grabbed a basic CRM called FreshBooks for $20 a month and set it up in a weekend. Tracks leads, sends reminders, even invoices. After 3 months I picked up 12 new clients from follow ups I woulda missed. Pays for itself easy.

Neighbor told me my fence post holes were way too shallow after watching me dig for an hour, now I measure every time

I was just eyeballing it like I always do until he walked over with his own shovel and showed me how the 2 foot mark on his post hole digger made a world of difference for keeping things straight in this Amarillo clay soil, has anyone else had a random neighbor save them from a wonky fence?

Found a simple trick for better moon photos without a telescope

I kept getting blurry moon shots with my phone camera, just a white blob every time. Tried tapping to focus and lowering exposure, still looked bad. Then I read somewhere to use a tripod and set a timer so my hands don't shake it. First try on Tuesday night came out sharp enough to see craters. Anyone else got any cheap hacks for phone astrophotography?

Hot take: My rigging book from 2005 is still more useful than some new apps I tried

Last week I was talking to a young operator on a job site near Dallas. He was showing me an app that calculates load angles and weights. It looked cool but it kept glitching on him. I pulled out my old spiral notebook with hand drawn diagrams and formulas I learned from a vet back in 2005. He laughed at first but then asked to copy a page. Made me realize that the basics we learn from old timers still beat fancy tech sometimes. Has anyone else had old school methods save them on a job?

Old timer told me to never trust a dry torque reading back in 2016

Had a 50 year vet at the shop in Tulsa tell me to always oil my threads before torquing head bolts. I figured he was just set in his old ways. Two years later I did a 6.0 Powerstroke job bone dry and snapped three bolts in the block. Spent 14 hours drilling and extracting them. That guy knew what he was talking about after all. Has anyone else had an old rule come back to bite them?

A kid at the comic shop made me rethink all my pulls...

This 14-year-old was talking about how he only buys trades because floppies are just 'ads for the collected edition' and honestly I couldn't argue with him. Been spending $50 a month on single issues for years and they just sit in boxes... has anyone else switched to waiting for trades?

Hot take: ultrasonic cleaners aren't always the answer

Tbh I was trying to clean a sticky shutter mechanism on an old Canonet and every forum said ultrasonic bath. I read a 1970s repair manual that said just use lighter fluid and a brush. Tried it and it worked way better without risking the lubrication. Has anyone else had better luck with old school methods over the fancy stuff?
