My buddy swore Hinge profile pics with fish were a dealbreaker, he was dead wrong.

So my friend Mark kept telling me to ditch the fishing pic on my Hinge profile. Said no woman wants to see a dead fish. I kept it up anyway because I spend half my summer on the lake. Got 12 matches in two weeks and 3 of them brought up the fish photo first thing. One girl said it showed I actually do stuff outside. So yeah Mark, your advice tanked. I'm keeping the fish pic. Anyone else get nonsense rules from friends that backfired?

Spent an hour lettering a sign only to realize the marker was bleeding through the whole thing

I was making a sign for the city council meeting last week, all proud of my sharp lettering on a foam board. After maybe 45 minutes of careful work I flipped it over and saw the marker had bled through to the back, making a huge mess. Turns out the cheap foam board from the dollar store soaks up marker way different than the name brand stuff. Anyone else deal with marker bleed on budget boards or got a fix that doesn't cost more than the board itself?

Can we talk about that Salesforce migration that bombed on us last October

My company switched CRM platforms back in October. The vendor promised a smooth 48 hour transition. It took 6 days and we lost 3 days of lead data in the process. I ended up rebuilding our contact lists from old email backups. Has anyone else had a major software rollout go this wrong without any warning?

Saw something wild at a restoration site in Charleston last week

I was down helping a buddy on a old row house near King Street and noticed the original floor joists were all hand-hewn. No nails, just mortise and tenon joints holding everything together for over 150 years. Got me thinking about how we overbuild stuff today. Any of you guys worked with actual hand-hewn timber before?

Unpopular opinion: that cashier at Home Depot was right to call me out

I was buying 10 bags of mulch last spring and complaining about the price, and the cashier just said 'you know you're paying for convenience, not quality.' Stuck with me because she was right - the $2.50 bag from the big box store fell apart after one rain. Anyone else had a stranger give you real talk like that?

Had a customer point out my seams were too wide on a living room job last month

I always thought a 1/4 inch gap was fine for seaming tape, but this guy pulled out a ruler and showed me his old carpet had no visible seams at all. He was right - my seams were way too loose, so now I run them at 1/8 inch max with better glue spread. Anyone else get schooled by a homeowner on something you thought you had down?

Old Detroit vs new electronic engines - I went with the 60 Series

Back in 2005 I had to choose between rebuilding my old mechanical Detroit or swapping in a Series 60 electronic. I picked the 60 because of fuel economy and it paid off at $1.50 a gallon savings on my route to Toledo. Has anyone else made the switch and regretted it?

Hot take: pin repair kits for Garmin 430 connectors are worth it

I spent two hours re-pinning a connector with an old screwdriver and a paperclip before a buddy handed me a real kit - took 4 minutes after that. Anyone else think the cheap way is a setup for failure, or am I just slow?

Found a stat about creosote buildup that made me change my whole cleaning schedule

I was reading through some NFPA reports last night and stumbled on a fact that surprised me. Turns out chimney fires caused over 25,000 house fires in the US just in 2021 according to their data. What got me is that most of those fires were from creosote buildup that could have been prevented with more frequent sweeps. I used to think twice a year was fine for my customers but now I'm thinking three times might be smarter, especially for wood stoves. Found this info on the NFPA website under their fire loss statistics section. Has anyone else adjusted their recommendations after seeing hard numbers like this?

Still seeing small businesses waste money on print ads in 2024

I deliver to a lot of local shops and I keep seeing coupons and flyers stuck in my bundles for the same places month after month. One coffee shop near me spends $400 a month on a local paper ad and I asked the owner if they ever tracked the response. He said he just assumes it works because his dad always did it that way. That money would go way further on a simple Google ad or even a neighborhood Facebook group. Has anyone else talked a shop owner out of throwing cash at dead print media?

Pro tip: 2FA through text messages is basically useless now

Man I'm way too lazy to be a target worth SIM swapping, but I still keep a backup phone with Google Authenticator in a drawer at home just in case I lose my main phone. My dumbest moment was when I switched carriers and forgot to move my 2FA codes over first, ended up locked out of my own Netflix account for a week. You're definitely not late to the party, I bet half the people here still use SMS and just hope it never happens to them. Got any tips for organizing all those codes without losing your mind?

Blame the bot but look at your own setup too - most AI schedulers need you to teach it rules about buffer time and overlapping slots so it actually knows what to block off.

Dropped $80 on a carbon brush kit and it saved my old Vacuum truck

My 2003 Ford F-250 started bucking like a rodeo bull a few years back, and I was convinced the transmission was toast. Took it to a shop, they wanted $3,000 for a rebuild. I towed it home in a huff and on a whim replaced the 8 dollar crankshaft position sensor. Truck fired right up like nothing ever happened. Makes you wonder how many perfectly good machines get sent to the crusher over a two dollar fuse or a loose wire.

Swapped from paper punch lists to a tablet app 3 months ago

Paper trails still work better for me because I can hand them off to a foreman right on the spot and they can't claim they never got the email. Apps are great until you're in a basement with no service and the photos won't upload. I keep a clipboard with carbonless punch sheets that I fill out in duplicate, one for me and one for the sub. That way everybody's holding the same physical proof of what's wrong and when it was flagged.
