My buddy's 'skip the first season' advice ruined a whole show for me

He swore Season 1 of The Expanse was skippable and to start at Season 2. I missed so much context that by Episode 4 I had no clue who anyone was, had to rewatch all of Season 1 anyway. Has anyone else gotten bad skip advice from a friend and regretted following it?

Oh man, your buddy did you dirty lol. Season 1 of The Expanse is literally the whole setup for everything, skipping it is like walking into a movie halfway through. I get why people say it starts slow but "skippable" is the worst word to use for it. You basically had to watch it anyway, so that advice just wasted your time and confused you more. I honestly think that friend owes you an apology, or at least a pizza for the hassle lol.

Did your buddy at least admit they were wrong after you had to go back? I had the same thing happen with a different show, and now I tell people to just push through the slow parts. The trick that saved me was watching with subtitles and letting the first season play in the background while I did chores, so I absorbed the names and places without getting bored. Then I did a quick recap video before season 2 and it clicked way better. Your friend meant well but they gave you a shortcut to a headache, that pizza suggestion is honestly fair.
