Rewatching The Wire with a critical eye changed how I see good dialogue

My uncle, who used to write for a local news station, told me to pay attention to what characters DON'T say in scenes. After binging season 1 again last month, I noticed how much they convey through silences and looks. Has anyone else had a show completely shift how you watch other series?

Season 4 of The Wire really nailed that with the kids, like when Michael just stares at his mom after she picks up her boyfriend over him. Wait, @the_thomas, didn't that stare happen after Michael's mom chose her new man over him when she gave him the money to leave? I might be mixing up a different scene, but I always thought the really gut-punch quiet moment was when Dukie is left standing on the corner after he gets kicked out of his foster home. That whole season is filled with silence that just hangs in the air. The wire was so good at letting the camera sit on a face instead of forcing a speech. Nothing fancy, just kids being abandoned in real time.

Buddy of mine who does film restoration told me he watched The Wire on mute once just to see how much story the blocking and expressions told. Said he knew exactly what was happening in every scene without hearing a single word.
