Dropped $300 on a fancy power hammer and learned a hard lesson
I figured I'd treat myself after a good season and bought this refurbished air hammer off a guy in Ohio. Paid $300 cash plus another $60 for shipping, thought I was getting a deal. Got it set up in the shop and ran maybe 20 blows before the piston seized up solid. Turns out the guy had put it together with the wrong seals and just never said anything. Spent another two weekends tearing it down and finding the right parts online. Eventually got it running right, but man that initial excitement turned into a lot of swearing. Has anyone else bought used equipment that looked fine but turned out to be a nightmare?

Honestly, @river952, that's basically my toolkit in a nutshell. Picked up a new drill, spent 20 minutes just trying to get the battery out without breaking a nail.

Respectfully, I see it different. That $300 air hammer was a bargain even if you had to rebuild it. New ones go for what, 15 times that? You bought a broken tool, fixed it yourself, and now you know exactly how it works down to the last seal. That's not a nightmare, that's how you actually learn this trade. Most guys would have just paid someone else to fix it and never understood a thing.
