I finally got my forge welds to actually hold
Used to always end up with cold shuts or delaminations no matter what I did. Switched to a higher borax flux ratio and bumped my forge temp up about 50 degrees last month and now my welds are solid. Anyone else struggle with getting the heat just right for forge welding?

@aaronsullivan nailed it, same exact thing happened to me and now I just go hot.

Buddy of mine fought with forge welding for months, tried every trick in the book and still got cold shuts. Then he accidentally left his forge running way too hot one afternoon and his welds came out perfect. He’s been running it that hot ever since.

That bit about "accidentally left his forge running way too hot" is pretty telling. So many guys spend forever chasing the perfect temperature with all these little adjustments, but really it's just about going way hotter than you think you need. I bet your buddy was underheating his steel that whole time without realizing it, thinking he was being careful. Sometimes the "wrong" way turns out to be the right way, you know? It's funny how a happy accident can solve a problem that took months of fighting.
