Showerthought: I finally counted every hammer in my rack and hit 41, that number shocked me
I was cleaning the corner of my garage last Saturday and decided to count every hammer I own, just for fun. I figured maybe 20, but the real number came out to 41, and that's not even counting the ones in the truck. Some are from my grandad, some I forged myself in the backyard, and a few I picked up at a swap meet in Cheyenne for two bucks each. Back when I started at 16, I only had one cross peen and I thought that was plenty. Now I've got ball peens in four sizes and I still reach for the same old one every time. What's the weird one in your rack that you never use but can't seem to get rid of?
Funny thing about the number 41 is that it sneaks up on you in stages. My dad had maybe 6 hammers his whole life and knew where each one was, but somewhere along the way hammers quit being tools and turned into souvenirs. Here is the angle nobody talks about: every one of those 41 is a little memory of a project or a person, so the count is really a count of jobs you finished and folks you knew. That drawer full of extras is basically a photo album that weighs 60 pounds. The one I never touch is a stubby tack hammer with a cracked handle from my uncle's estate, useless for anything I do, and it stays because throwing it out would feel like throwing out him.
