Tried coal vs charcoal for a week straight on my forge

Ran coal for 5 days and switched to charcoal Thursday night. Coal burns way hotter but the smoke and clinker cleanup drove me nuts, charcoal just feels cleaner and I could actually see my workpiece. Anyone else find coal overrated for small projects?

Did you ever run into the whole "charcoal sparks like crazy" thing? I remember reading some old forum post where this guy swore up and down that certain types of charcoal would pop and throw hot embers everywhere, especially if it wasn't fully burned down. I tried using some cheap briquettes once just to see what the fuss was about and honestly, the popping was bad enough I had to keep my face shield on the whole time. That coal smoke smell is rough too, gets in your clothes and you can't get it out.

That "mix of both" idea is smart, I might try half and half next time to see if it cuts down the clinker.

I read somewhere that charcoal burns with less sulfur, so you're not getting that rotten egg smell either." Coal clinker is a pain for sure, but I've seen guys use a mix of both to get the heat without the mess. Sounds like you found what works for you, and that's all that matters when you're just doing small stuff.
