Finally played the original Doom for the first time and I get why people still talk about it

I'm 28 and grew up on modern shooters. Picked up Doom on a whim during the Steam sale for like $3. Played it for about 4 hours straight last night. The movement is so fast and simple, no reloading, no crouching, just running and shooting. Got stuck on a puzzle for 20 minutes because I forgot doors can be secret walls. Has anyone else who missed it the first time gone back and had that click moment?

oh man, the secret wall thing got me too. i spent like ten minutes in the first level just shooting every single wall i saw because i missed that the green armor was behind a fake one. but what really sold me was the music. i had no idea doom had this heavy industrial metal soundtrack, i was sitting there headbanging while chainsawing a pinky demon. it's wild how a game from 1993 just throws you in with no handholding and expects you to figure it out. i remember getting lost in the hall of mirrors level and just running in circles until i accidentally pressed on a wall and found the exit. modern games would have a blinking arrow or a waypoint, but doom just says "good luck, sucker." and that freedom is honestly kind of refreshing.

Yeah but did you ever find a secret that made zero sense on purpose?
